It’s a longstanding military tradition for newly commissioned officers – your first salute.
James Williams, retired Staff Sargent US Marines and a World War II veteran had the honor of giving the first salute to his granddaughter, 2nd lieutenant, Charlotte Williams.
The old Staff Sargent properly asked permission if he could hug his granddaughter.
Here is the description from Youtube, as uploaded by Charlotte’s father:
My father, James Williams, retired Staff Sargent US Marines, has the honor of delivering the first salute to his Granddaughter, 2nd lieutenant, Charlotte Williams.
Ceremony has held at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico, VA. August 9, 2013.
