UPDATE: It appears that reports that CNN’s ‘Parts Unknown’ was interrupted by pornography in the Boston area last night were part of a hoax carried out on Twitter. The story was widely reported by many major news outlets including Fox News, The Independent, and Variety. Even CNN originally issued a statement implying the incident happened at a regional level. However, after more investigation, it appears the incident was a hoax started on Twitter. A CNN spokesperson issued the following statement: “Despite media reports to the contrary, RCN assures us that there was no interruption of CNN’s programming in the Boston area last night.”

Here is the original coverage: We all mess up from time to time, but someone is going to get fired after this incident. Last night around 11PM when everyone was coming out of their food coma, they were treated to something very unexpected.

Unsuspecting viewers were planning on tuning in to watch a new episode of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown on CNN but were subsequently shown porn starring transsexual pornstar Riley Quinn for the 30 minutes the show was supposed to run.

It appears the masses were spared, as apparently, only viewers in Boston saw the explicit mistaken content. People began taking to Twitter to voice their concerns. One tweet read: “I can’t wait until [RCN] wakes up [tomorrow] & realizes that hardcore porn was broadcast on [CNN] instead of [Parts Unknown] tonight.” The same user commented an hour later that the CNN channel was taken off-air.

Another user said, “Did anyone else with RCN in Boston see the hardcore porn that was broadcast by CNN by mistake?” They added, “Vague update from RCN on the #BourdainPorn incident: everything ‘working perfectly,’ can’t tell how many households affected.”

It’s not clear if the incident was an accident or if there was malicious intent behind it. It would seem difficult to imagine that it was simply an accident.

On Friday the RNC offered a response to the incident after it went viral. “We have not had any reports of the programming issue you mentioned on CNN in Boston,” they wrote. “If you’re still having an issue with that channel, please DM us your address so we can troubleshoot when you’re home.”

RCN serves nearly 300,000 subscribers predominantly in the Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC area. Earlier this year, the service provider was acquired for $1.6 billion by the private investment firm TPG.

Luckily, it was past bedtime for potential underage viewers, but that probably won’t save someone at RCN from getting yelled at today.
