Iran has added insult to injury after the capture of 10 US Navy sailors last month. New footage showing the sailors in tears shortly after capture was released by Iranian TV and the capture was recreated in a recent parade in Tehran.
The footage was immediately condemned by the US Navy whose spokesperson said the airing of the footage was “outrageous and unacceptable.”
Cmdr. Kevin Stephens said the proper course of action for Iran would have been an escort into international waters, not a detention.
“Professional mariners understand that it is a duty and obligation to assist other mariners who suffer mechanical problems or who find themselves off track at sea,” Stephens said, according to Navy Times. “We are grateful diplomacy worked at the end of the day, but it would never have come to that had the Iranian maritime forces involved behaved professionally and responsibly.”
