The above video is spreading like wildfire on social media. It has racked up tens of millions of views in a manner of hours.
In the video, we see a Spring Valley High School Resource Officer in Richland County, SC apparently dragging a female student out of her desk and then throwing her to the ground.
The girl in the video was asked to leave the school by a teacher and then by an administrator. After she refused to do so, the school resource officer, identified as Deputy Ben Fields, came to the classroom and that’s apparently where the video starts.
The situation leading up to the student being asked to leave is currently unknown. The student was ultimately arrested and charged with disturbing a school. She was released to her parent’s custody a short time later.
Deputy Fields has been placed on administrative leave following emergence of the video. According to a local media report:
Lt. Curtis Wilson with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Monday night that Deputy Ben Fields will not be back at any school pending the results of an investigation.
Sheriff Leon Lott, whose agency is in charge of the school resource program at the school, was out of town at a law enforcement meeting when the incident took place. Wilson said while they’re asking for patience while an investigation takes place, Lott was not pleased with what’s being shown to the public.
“He was totally disturbed by what he saw,” Wilson said. “He wants answers to what happened and why that happened.”
