The video shows 19-year-old Logan Younger, who was thrown from the car. He was not hurt and fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended by witnesses.
Police say Officer Justin Thompson had arrested Younger at a Jonesboro mall Thursday where he was believed to have been intoxicated.
Once in the patrol car, Younger slipped the handcuff off of his left wrist. At first, he seemed to hide the fact that he was no longer restrained, but then he continued to fidget and move his arms in a way that would have alerted Thompson to his situation.
Thompson radioed for assistance. Younger began kicking the seat and fighting his restraint before remembering he had a lighter in his pocket.
Younger struck up the Zippo and leaned over to the floor board in an attempt to set the car on fire. It was then that Thompson inadvertently hit a manhole cover. He lost control of the car, which reportedly struck a curb and skidded into signs, a telephone box, and a chain-link fence.
The impact of the crash threw Younger, who had not been restrained with a seat-belt, through the back window of the cruiser.
Thompson was pinned inside the car and had to be removed by firefighters. He was taken to a local hospital for his injuries. Younger was caught and has been charged with escape, public intoxication, fleeing on foot and possession.
Here’s footage of the accident. The crash is almost at the very end.
