Right up there with flying spiders and land sharks we have a creature straight out of your nightmares. Carnufex carolinensis, nicknamed “The Carolina Butcher” was a 9 foot long crocodile who walked and hunted on its hind legs.
A fossilized skull, spine and some arm bones found in North Carolina led to the discovery.
The massive croc is truly ancient, predating what we consider to be more modern dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years.
It likely died out over 200 million years ago during a mass extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to emerge.
The discovery was documented in a recent paper by Lindsay Zanno and colleagues.
